Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund: Strengthening Workers’ Rights with the “Tarifwende” Campaign

Germany’s largest labor confederation, the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (DGB), has launched a significant campaign to protect workers’ rights and combat the issue of “tarifflucht” (employers avoiding collective bargaining obligations).

The Tarifwende initiative aims to strengthen adherence to collective agreements and secure workers’ rights.

What is “Tarifwende”?

Tarifwende is a call to action against the growing trend of employers withdrawing from collective bargaining agreements. According to the DGB, collective agreements not only provide better wages and social benefits but also maintain social peace and strengthen the national economy. However, currently, only about half of workers in Germany are covered by such agreements. The DGB is calling on the government to ensure that only employers bound by collective agreements receive public funds and contracts.

130 Billion Euro Loss

The DGB estimates that the German economy loses about 130 billion euros annually due to employers’ avoidance of collective agreements. This loss affects both the social insurance system and the national budget. DGB Chairwoman Yasmin Fahimi is urging the government to take stricter measures and invest more in strengthening workers’ rights.

Campaign Goals

The Tarifwende campaign seeks to improve workers’ conditions, ensure higher wages, and promote more fairness in workplaces. The DGB is also advocating for Germany to expand its collective bargaining coverage under the EU Minimum Wage Directive, set to take effect in 2024.

This DGB campaign is seen as a turning point for the protection and advancement of workers’ rights in Germany and includes numerous initiatives aimed at strengthening unions.
