Germany is addressing its need for skilled labor by implementing new regulations that further simplify the migration process. As of June 1, 2024, the reformed Skilled Labor Immigration Act is in full effect, offering significant advantages for skilled workers seeking to relocate to Germany. Under these new rules, the Germany Opportunity Card has been introduced to allow skilled workers from non-EU countries to search for jobs in Germany. This card operates on a points-based system, considering qualifications, professional experience, connections to Germany, and personal factors like age.

In addition, 50,000 workers from Western Balkan countries will now have access to the German labor market, further supporting Germany’s efforts to attract skilled labor. This step is particularly significant for facilitating skilled worker immigration to meet the country’s growing economic demands.

The Skilled Labor Immigration Act (FEG) has been facilitating the migration of skilled workers to Germany since 2020. However, this law applies only to individuals from outside the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA), which includes countries like Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. In 2023, reforms were made to the law to better meet Germany’s economic needs, with the first changes taking effect in November.

University graduates and individuals with professional qualifications are benefiting from these new regulations, which provide various incentives for relocating to Germany. One key change is the lowering of the salary threshold required to apply for the EU Blue Card, making it accessible to more applicants. The Blue Card grants a residence permit valid for up to four years or for the duration of the employment contract, offering skilled workers the opportunity to live and work in Germany.
